Batch picking: four ways to organise your picking rounds

Batch picking: four ways to organise your picking rounds

Pick multiple orders in one round while keeping every customer’s products separate. With Orderpicking App, each order is assigned to its own bin on your picking cart. The app guides your picker through the products and shows how many units belong in each bin.

You can organise your batches in four ways: use printed order labels, automatically retrieve the oldest orders, let the picker select orders or assign orders from your webshop admin.

How batch picking works

Prepare a picking cart with clearly labelled bins: A, B, C and so on. Each bin holds one customer order.

During the picking round, Orderpicking App combines the products from the orders into a picking list. For each product, the picker sees how many units to collect and which bins they belong in. If the same product appears in several orders, the picker can collect it for those orders together.

Once picking is complete, the packer opens each order, checks the contents using the app and packs the products. The shipping label is then created in your own shipping system.

Option 1: Batch picking with order labels

Use this flow when you want a printed order label to stay with each order throughout picking and packing.

One-time setup

In the settings of the Orderpicking App integration in your webshop admin, enable Enable custom order select for batch picking.

For each batch

Print the order labels from your webshop admin using the Orderpicking App integration. Open the app and select a picker with batch picking enabled.

Place the first order label in bin A and scan its order barcode to add the order. Place the next label in bin B and scan that barcode. Continue until you have added all the orders for the round.

Select Create batch and start picking. Follow the app’s instructions and place the products in the correct bins. When everything has been collected, complete the picking round.

At the packing station, the packer takes a bin and scans the order barcode on the label inside it. They check the contents against the order in the app, pack the products and complete packing. Finally, they create the shipping label in their own shipping system.

Option 2: Automatically create a batch

Use this flow to let the app prepare a batch from your oldest orders.

Set your batch size

Choose how many orders the picker should handle per round in the picker settings. You can set this to 2–20 orders per batch.

For each batch

The picker opens the app and selects their picker profile. Orderpicking App retrieves the oldest orders according to the configured batch size.

The picker reviews the batch and selects Start picking. Each order is assigned to a bin, and the batch receives its own number.

Write the batch number on a small whiteboard attached to the cart, or use another clearly visible marker. For example, mark the cart with 328 and keep the bins labelled A, B and C.

The app shows each product and the quantities required for each bin. The picker collects and distributes the products, then completes the picking round.

The packer finds the order in the packing overview using its batch number and bin letter. 328-A, for example, identifies the order in bin A on the cart marked 328. They open the order, check and pack the contents, complete packing and create the shipping label in their own system.

Option 3: The picker selects the orders

Use this flow when pickers need to choose which orders to include in their picking round.

One-time setup

In your webshop admin, enable Enable custom order select for batch picking in the Orderpicking App integration settings.

For each batch

After opening the app and selecting their picker profile, the picker adds orders by:

  • Selecting an order from the list.
  • Scanning an order barcode.
  • Entering an order number.

Orders are assigned to bins in the order they are added. The first order goes into bin A, the second into bin B, the third into bin C, and so on.

Once the selection is complete, the picker selects Create batch, writes the batch number on the small whiteboard attached to the cart and starts picking.

The app guides the picker through the products and shows how many units belong in each bin. When all products have been collected, the picker completes the round.

Packing follows the same process as an automatic batch: select the order in the packing overview, match its batch number and bin letter to the correct cart and bin, check the contents using the app and pack the order. Create the shipping label in your own system after completing packing.

Option 4: The webshop manager assigns orders

Use this flow when you want to organise the workload from your webshop admin before pickers begin.

One-time setup

Enable Enable manual order assigning to pickers in the Orderpicking App integration settings in your webshop admin.

For each batch

The webshop manager selects orders in the webshop admin and assigns them to a picker in bulk. This allows the manager to prepare work for different pickers at the start of the day.

The picker opens the app and selects their usual picker profile. The assigned work is ready. They review the products to collect and select Start picking.

Keep the batch number clearly visible on the cart. The picker follows the app’s instructions, distributes the products across the correct bins and completes the picking round.

The packer opens the corresponding order from the packing overview. They use the batch number and bin letter to find the correct bin, check the products against the app and pack the order. After completing packing, they create the shipping label in their own shipping system.

Keep every order easy to identify

For batches identified by number and bin letter, use this simple rule:

Keep the batch number visible on the cart and the bin letters easy to read. This helps the packer match each order in the app to the products collected for that customer.

For the printed-label flow, keep the order label inside its assigned bin so the packer can scan it directly.

Choose the flow that fits your team

Use printed labels when your team identifies orders by scanning a label in the bin. Choose automatic batches to work through the oldest orders, custom selection to give pickers control over their rounds, or manual assignment to plan the workload from your webshop admin.

Whichever option you choose, the process stays consistent: collect the products, keep orders separate, check and pack with the app, then create the shipping label in your own system.

Orderpicking App launches a WMS Light for WooCommerce — no webshop required

Orderpicking App launches a WMS Light for WooCommerce — no webshop required

We’ve been hearing the same question from a growing number of B2B companies: “Can we use Orderpicking App if we don’t run a webshop?” Until now, the honest answer was “sort of” — they’d need to upload order data through a spreadsheet or build their own JSON feed. It worked, but it was clunky, often technical, and usually cost more time than it saved.

So we built something better.

A lightweight WMS, built on a platform 60% of the web already trusts

Our new feature is a light version of a Warehouse Management System (WMS), running on WordPress and WooCommerce — the same proven foundation that powers roughly 60% of all websites worldwide. For companies without an online store, that means no new platform to learn, no developer required to get started, and a system that’s easy to find support for.

Set up your products once, then manage everything from one place

Getting started takes one pass through your catalog. For every product, you add an image, title, SKU/EAN/GTIN, a storage location, and current stock — plus box barcodes and quantities where relevant. Once your products are in with accurate location data, you’re ready to work with orders.

Create orders manually — from the backend or the POS

With products and stock in place, you can create an order manually for any customer, complete with their contact details and the products they’ve ordered. Every order stays visible in the system: you can update its status as it moves through picking and packing, and all picking and packing data is recorded right under the order — building a running log with statistics you can look back on.

Orders can be created two ways: through the WMS backend, or through the Orderpicking App POS solution, which lets you scan product barcodes directly to build an order even faster.

Stock that stays accurate, automatically

Every product in the WMS carries a stock quantity that counts down with each order — so during picking, you always know exactly what’s on the shelf. Adding new stock is just as simple, whether you do it from the WMS itself or through the Orderpicking App Inventory add-on.

The net effect: companies move from paper-based, error-prone administration to one simple online system where everyone — warehouse staff and management alike — has immediate visibility into products, stock levels, and open orders.

This is all made possible through the combination of Orderpicking App WMS and Orderpicking App for only 19,95 per month.

Digital Picklist vs. Paper Picklist: Why Warehouses Are Making the Switch

Digital Picklist vs. Paper Picklist: Why Warehouses Are Making the Switch

If you’re still relying on a paper picklist to run your warehouse, you already know the pain points: illegible handwriting, lost sheets, picking errors, and no real-time visibility into what’s happening on the floor. As order volumes grow and customer expectations rise, the humble paper picklist simply can’t keep up anymore.

In this article, we compare the traditional paper picklist to a modern digital picklist powered by Orderpicking App, and explain why so many warehouses are leaving paper behind for good.

What Is a Picklist, and Why Does It Matter?

A picklist is the document (or digital instruction) that tells a warehouse worker exactly which products to retrieve, in what quantity, and from which location, in order to fulfill a customer order. The picklist is the beating heart of the picking process: get it wrong, and the whole order fulfillment chain suffers — from shipping delays to costly returns.

For decades, the picklist lived on paper: printed sheets clipped to a board, carried around the warehouse, and manually checked off item by item. It worked, more or less, when order volumes were low and product ranges were small. But in today’s fast-moving fulfillment environment, the paper picklist has become a bottleneck rather than a tool.

The Problem with a Paper Picklist

A paper picklist may feel simple and familiar, but it comes with hidden costs that add up quickly:

  • No real-time updates. Once a paper picklist is printed, it’s frozen in time. If stock levels change, an order is cancelled, or a location is corrected, the picker on the floor has no way of knowing.
  • Higher error rates. Manual checkmarks, similar SKUs, and human fatigue all contribute to picking mistakes — the wrong item, the wrong quantity, or a missed line entirely.
  • No traceability. When something goes wrong, there’s no digital trail. You can’t easily see who picked what, when, or how long it took.
  • Slower onboarding. New warehouse staff need time to learn locations and interpret picklists, since there’s no built-in guidance.
  • Wasted time. Walking back and forth to a printer, searching for a misplaced picklist, or re-picking an order due to an error all eat into productive hours.

For a small operation, these issues might be manageable. But as soon as order volume increases, a paper picklist quickly becomes the weakest link in the fulfillment process.

How a Digital Picklist Changes the Game

An Orderpicking App replaces the static paper picklist with a dynamic, real-time digital picklist that lives on a handheld device, scanner, or tablet. Instead of reading a printed sheet, the picker follows guided, step-by-step instructions that update instantly as orders and stock levels change.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

1. Real-Time Accuracy

A digital picklist is always up to date. If a product is moved, cancelled, or out of stock, the app reflects that immediately — no more picking from an outdated paper picklist.

2. Barcode Scanning Reduces Errors

With an Orderpicking App, every pick is verified by scanning a barcode. This eliminates the guesswork of a paper picklist and drastically reduces mis-picks, since the system won’t let a worker confirm the wrong item.

3. Optimized Picking Routes

Unlike a paper picklist, which usually lists items in a fixed order, a digital picklist can dynamically sequence picks based on the most efficient route through the warehouse — saving walking time and boosting throughput.

4. Full Traceability and Reporting

Every scan, every pick, and every completed order is logged automatically. Managers get instant insight into picker performance, order status, and bottlenecks — visibility that a paper picklist simply cannot provide.

5. Faster Onboarding

Because the app guides pickers step by step, new employees become productive much faster than they would using a paper picklist and verbal instructions alone.

6. Fewer Returns, Happier Customers

Since accuracy improves right at the source, digital picking directly reduces the number of incorrect shipments — which means fewer returns, fewer complaints, and better customer satisfaction.

Orderpicking App now connects with Mijnwebwinkel 🇳🇱

Orderpicking App now connects with Mijnwebwinkel 🇳🇱

Now integrated with Mijnwebwinkel

Great news! Orderpicking App now officially connects with Mijnwebwinkel — one of the Netherlands’ most popular e-commerce platforms. Whether you sell candles, clothing, or croquettes, picking your orders just got a whole lot easier.

Mijnwebwinkel is known for its simplicity, its huge community of Dutch and Belgian webshop owners, and its no-nonsense approach to online selling. It’s exactly the kind of platform we love to connect with: built for entrepreneurs who want to grow without getting lost in complicated software.

Why Mijnwebwinkel?

With this new integration, Mijnwebwinkel users can now:

  • Pick orders directly and error-free with Orderpicking App
  • Automatically sync orders, products, and stock levels between both platforms
  • Speed up their picking process while reducing mistakes
  • Scale their fulfillment without scaling their headaches

Or, as we like to say: minder zoeken, meer pakketten versturen.

A logical step

Mijnwebwinkel webshops are often growing fast, and growth means more orders — and more room for error if picking isn’t organized well. With this integration, that’s no longer a problem. Orders flow straight from Mijnwebwinkel into Orderpicking App, ready to be picked quickly and accurately, with full visibility every step of the way.

Built for growing webshops

This connection is another step in making Orderpicking App available wherever webshop owners need it most. We’re excited to help even more Dutch and Belgian entrepreneurs pick smarter, pack faster, and keep their customers smiling.

Proost on this new connection! 🥂
On to many more orders, picked perfectly.

One wrongly picked order costs you more than a return label

One wrongly picked order costs you more than a return label

A customer orders three products. The packing slip is printed, someone walks the warehouse floor, grabs three products off the shelf and puts them in a box. Done. Until the customer unpacks it and one product turns out to be slightly different from what was ordered. Wrong size, wrong color, wrong model — it doesn’t matter what exactly. It’s a mistake, and now the real work begins.

Picking sounds like the simplest part of order fulfillment. Someone walks to a shelf, grabs a product, puts it in a box. Yet this is exactly the step where most mistakes in a webshop happen, and where those mistakes end up costing the most. Not just in euros per error, but in time, in repeated handling, and ultimately in the trust of a customer who might not come back.

Why most mistakes happen right here

A picker works under time pressure, often surrounded by dozens of similar products. Two variants of the same sweater that only differ in color. A product that’s just been replaced by a newer version, while the old stock still sits in the same spot. These aren’t exotic scenarios — they’re daily practice in almost every warehouse.

In a manual process — a paper packing slip, a glance at the shelf, done — there’s no safety net. The picker relies on memory and on the label being correct. One moment of inattention, and the mistake is already in the box before anyone notices.

The bigger the webshop, the bigger the problem. At five orders a day, you can still keep track. At five hundred orders a day, manual picking becomes a game of chance where the odds of a slip-up grow with every extra order.

The bill for a wrongly picked order

A misconception that keeps sticking around: a mistake is easily corrected. In practice it isn’t, and the bill comes in layers.

Time. A wrong pick first means figuring out what went wrong, then picking a new product, repacking it and shipping it again. On top of that comes the return process for the wrongly delivered product. What should have been one pick quickly turns into three or four separate actions.

Money. Every extra shipment costs shipping fees, extra packaging material and labor time that wasn’t budgeted for. At an error rate of just a few percent across hundreds of orders a month, that adds up to a structural cost that doesn’t appear anywhere in the budget, yet keeps coming back every month.

Trust. This is the damage that lingers longest and is hardest to repair. A customer who receives the wrong product draws a conclusion about the whole webshop: not careful, not to be trusted with a next order. Customers forgive a delay sooner than a mistake. Operational costs can be captured in a spreadsheet. Lost trust can’t, but it works its way into next quarter’s revenue just as hard.

How webshop owners usually try to fix this now

Most webshop owners recognize the problem, but reach for solutions that don’t match their scale.

  • Double-checking. A second employee checks the order before the box is sealed. It works, but it costs double the labor time and is the first thing skipped when things get busy — exactly when mistakes are most likely.
  • Full-blown WMS software. A complete warehouse management system with scanners and dedicated hardware. It solves the problem at its root, but the implementation time and investment are often out of proportion for a webshop that’s just growing from a hundred to a thousand orders a month.
  • Tighter pick routes on paper. Helps with speed, but changes nothing about the core problem: there’s still no check that physically confirms the right product is being picked up.

The pattern is always the same: either the solution is too weak to actually prevent mistakes, or too heavy to be practical for a webshop without the budget of a large fulfillment center.

What actually works: a check at the moment of picking itself

The core of the problem is that there’s no check at the moment that actually matters: when a product is taken off the shelf. Any solution that doesn’t catch that moment doesn’t solve the problem — at best it treats the symptoms.

What genuinely makes a difference is a system that confirms, right at that moment: this is the right product, for this order. No memory, no assumption, but a direct check that can’t be wrong. That’s where barcode scanning proves its value, provided it’s accessible enough to actually be used by smaller and mid-sized webshops too.

Orderpicking App: scan verification without expensive hardware

This is exactly the gap Orderpicking App fills. Instead of buying separate barcode scanners, you use the camera of a phone or iPad that’s probably already lying around. The app scans the product, instantly compares it to the order, and immediately flags it if something doesn’t match — before the product disappears into the box.

The system works for single orders, but just as well for bulk picking, where multiple orders are gathered in one pass through the warehouse. It’s precisely during bulk picking, when products for different orders temporarily come together, that the risk of mix-ups is highest — and where scan verification is the clearest proof that everything still went right.

No investment in scanners, no complicated IT rollout, no weeks of implementation. An affordable subscription, the app on a phone or iPad that’s already in the warehouse, and immediately fewer mistakes on the floor. For webshop owners who don’t want their growth held back by the very process that costs them time, money and trust, that’s exactly the step that makes the difference between hoping it goes well and knowing it does.
